Therapeutic Approaches

A Safe and Reflective Space for Recovery, Learning, and Growth

Whatever difficulties you are facing, I offer a space rooted in the belief that you can learn and grow from your experiences. I am here to listen, stand alongside you through painful feelings, and support you in finding ways to heal and grow.

Our therapy sessions provide an opportunity to explore and process difficult thoughts and emotions in a non-judgmental, compassionate environment. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, or life transitions, therapy can help foster resilience and well-being.

A Different Perspective: What Happened to You?

Rather than asking, “What’s wrong with you?”, I invite a different question: “What happened to you?”

Too often, distress can feel like a personal failing, as though others blame you for your struggles. While labels like “depression” or “generalised anxiety” can help name what you’re experiencing, they can also feel limiting or stigmatising.

You are more than a collection of symptoms, you are not simply a diagnosis.

Clinical psychology approaches mental health through formulation, a process that looks at:

  • What feels difficult right now
  • Past experiences that may have contributed
  • Current life factors maintaining distress
  • Coping strategies already in place

You are the expert on yourself.

My role is to listen, reflect, and guide you toward alternative perspectives, meaning, and strategies that facilitate healing and growth.

Integrative, Evidence-Based Therapy

As a clinical psychologist, I use a range of evidence-based approaches, recognised by NICE guidelines to support mental well-being.

After collaboratively developing an understanding of your difficulties, we explore which therapeutic approach (or combination) may be most beneficial for you.
Core Therapies I Use:

CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a structured, goal-oriented approach that focuses on present-day experiences and practical solutions.

It helps identify unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns that keep you stuck. By increasing awareness of these cycles -especially in relationships and daily life- you can make more intentional choices and develop healthier responses.

CFT - Compassion-Focused Therapy cultivates self-compassion, helping you navigate self-criticism and shame with greater kindness.

While acknowledging past experiences, CFT focuses on developing self-compassion and resilience in the present. It explores how our emotional systems (threat, drive, and soothing) shape thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By understanding these patterns, you can establish balance, resilience, and a more compassionate relationship with both yourself and others.

ACT – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps you live with purpose and authenticity by aligning your actions with your core values.

It encourages mindful acceptance of challenges rather than struggling against them, reducing emotional distress. By identifying what truly matters, ACT supports you in making choices that support a more fulfilling, values-driven life - grounded in what it means to be human.

DBT - Dialectical Behaviour therapy balances accepting challenges with making meaningful changes to improve emotional well-being and relationships.

It introduces four key skill areas - emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. By practising these, you can build emotional stability, navigate difficult feelings, and interact with others more effectively.

Trauma Therapy

I offer Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) as specialised approaches to processing trauma.

My EMDR work incorporates principles from polyvagal theory and parts work (IFS), recognising how trauma impacts both the nervous system and different aspects of the self.

EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing can help reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, making them feel less intrusive in daily life.

This structured therapy uses guided eye movements or gentle tapping to help the brain process distressing experiences in a way that helps the memories feel less overwhelming. Because it doesn’t require talking in detail about what happened, EMDR can feel like a safer and more manageable way to work through traumatic experiences.

Polyvagal theory helps make sense of how the nervous system responds to trauma, shaping survival reactions like fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown.

The nervous system constantly assesses safety, not just from its environment but also through connection with others (co-regulation). By recognising these reaction patterns and their roots in past experiences, individuals can develop regulation strategies to create a greater sense of safety, both within themselves and in relationships.

IFS - Parts work recognises that we all have different aspects of ourselves that show up in different situations, adapting to meet our needs and keep us safe.

During difficult or overwhelming experiences, some parts may have developed protective strategies that were necessary at the time but now feel limiting. When  therapy honours the parts that created these defences, individuals can reintegrate them with compassion so they no longer hold them back from fully engaging with life.
